Saturday is the day I have been waiting for. I am off work, the sun will be out, the high temperature is supposed to be 50, which is border line on riding vs hurting for me. I don't care, I am going Saturday. Friday morning I drained the old, stale gas out of my bike and replaced it with 3 gallons of fresh 91 octane fuel. I lubed the chain, zeroed out my odometer, checked my spokes and tire pressures, talked with Randall about where we would ride today, packed my forrest maps in my back pack and got my gear bag packed. There, I'm set to go Saturday morning now.
Overlook from trail taken on a ride last year (where we're riding Saturday)
Late Friday afternoon, out of the blue, my left ankle starts hurting so bad I can barely walk. I get up and attempt to walk it out, thinking (hoping) it is just a catch in it that is preventing it from bending. Oh no, nothing that simple. It gradually gets worse and is hurting more by 6:30 Friday evening. NO! This cannot be happening tonight, I'm riding tomorrow! By 8:00 my flare has hit both wrists, my right elbow and right shoulder.
So I sit here at the computer today, enjoying my flare and the sunshine from inside. I just climbed out of the hot tub and applied some Voltaren Gel to my knees and hands. Guess I'll kick back and watch a movie this afternoon. Well, at least Randall, Darel and Race got to enjoy our first good day of the year.

As we are entering autumn here south of the equator, the temperatures are already falling and once again I am not looking forward to April/May, when the temps plummet for the next few months. I always try to psych myself out mentally for the arrival of the cold, but each year it seems worse. I'm still hoping this will not be the case this time around. Hang in there, and hopefully your winter will soon be over!
I have been spoiled this winter... that is until this week. Lots of snow suddenly arrived overnight and more and more snow every day since. Ugh!! It makes me want to stay snuggled in my bed. Sorry that you missed out on your ride, that bites!
Talk about ruined plans. Well, maybe next time. (Make sure you pick me up:)next time.) I had a tiring day today and didn't get anything done. My house looks like Fort Knox and my kids are lucky they got fed. (But, I caught up on the shows on my DVR: so much for the positive.) And it is still snowing - we are supposed to get 12 inches by the weekend's end.
Sorry to hear about the flare-up and the missed ride. Hope you feel better soon.
Oh no Terry! That is awful. I hate when fun plans are put on hold. But, remember that they are just on hold - you have many riding days ahead of you, right?
So sorry Terry...winter really sucks with RA! I am looking into antibiotic treatment for my RA. There is an interesting site....roadback.org. I was skeptical at first but now it makes sense. Hope you have warm days to come so you can ride! I'm SO ready for spring myself! :)
RA Guy, I hope winter is easy on you south of the equator this year. I dread winter more each year now that I have RA.
Mallen, staying in bed all day sounds good! No problem about the ride, there will be more opportunities to ride. I don't worry about missed chances any more.
Lana, I ought to be used to this by now, but it still bums me out when it happens. Especially since this is the first good day we have had in a long time. I have rode 1 time since the middle of December. I was looking at my ride log last week and I rode 9 times in Dec - Feb last year. Your on, I'll pick you up next ride. You would love getting away from everything for a few hours!
Hey Cathy, you're so right... it's not the end of the world. And living with RA, we have learned that this is just a part of it. (It's a part we don't like though!)
Leslie, I tried antibiotics (minocycline) with MTX for about 6 months and didn't do as well as with the Enbrel/MTX. Good luck with it, I hope it works for you. I'm with you, spring can't get here quick enough!
